Skin Cancer by the numbers

Skin cancer affects 20% of Americans. One person dies every hour in North America from Skin cancer. 8,500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer each day in the U.S. alone.  It is more prevalent than breast, prostate, lung and colon cancers combined losartan 50 mg tablet. By far the most common three types are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. More than 90 percent of these skin cancers are attributable to UV radiation from the sun. Which means, they are PREVENTABLE!!

Dermatologists recommend that people use cream sunscreens versus the spray versions because oftentimes, the wind blows it away from the skin and you don’t get the SPF rating if it never makes it on your skin. Remember it needs to be applied generously before you even get outside to the beach, pool, or garden to have it’s full protective impact.

How much does sunscreen prevent skin cancer.  Recently scientists from Ohio State University tested the application of a variety of sunscreens with SPF 30 on mice before exposing them to UVB light. The mice were genetically engineered to have skin that closely resembles humans (which freaks me out a bit but let’s continue).

The results? All of the sunscreens with SPF 30 reduced the risk of melanoma by 80%.  That’s a massive difference that is worth betting on. Here’s a quick reminder of what to watch for with the ABC’s of skin of skincare when watching for cancer.

A – Asymmetry – If you draw a line through the middle, the two sides will match, meaning it is symmetrical. If you draw a line through this mole, the two halves will not match, meaning it is asymmetrical, a warning sign for melanoma.

B – Border – A benign mole has smooth, even borders, unlike melanomas. The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven with notched edges.

C – Color – Most benign moles are all one color— often a single shade of brown. Having a variety of colors is another warning signal. A number of different shades of brown, tan or black could appear or even red or blue.

D – Size – Benign moles usually have a smaller diameter than malignant ones. Melanomas are typically larger in diameter than the eraser on your pencil tip (¼ inch or 6mm), but can be smaller when first detected.

E – Evolving – Common, benign moles look the  same over time. Be on the alert when a mole starts to evolve or change in any way. It if grows wings, artificial intelligence, or walks on it’s own this is a sign to see a research scientist for a paid study on you. When a mole is evolving, see a doctor. Any change — in size, shape, color, elevation, or another trait, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting — points to danger.

In conclusion, I hope this gives you a better idea of the cold hard facts about skin cancer and the signs that you need to have your skin checked by a professional.
